Do you believe Jesus as your deliverer from the power of evil in the world?
Show Notes Transcript

Six clashes show Jesus begin delivering Israel and humanity from the power of evil. Jesus keeps delivering us in his death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. Victory over evil and death will be complete when Jesus returns to bring eternal life. Do you believe Jesus as your deliverer from the power of evil in the world?

Tim Schweikhard:
0:02
I'm reading from Luke Chapter Four. Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness where for 40 days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, if you are the son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread. Jesus answered him. It is written. One does not live by bread alone. Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant, all the kingdoms of the world and the devil said to him, to you, I will give their glory and all of this authority for it has been given over to me and I give it to anyone. I police. If you then will worship me, it will all be yours. Jesus answered him. It is written, worship the Lord your God and serve on the hamp.:
Tim Schweikhard:
1:04
The devil took him to Jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple saying to him, if you are the son of God, throw yourself down from here. For it is written, he will command his angels concerning you to protect you and on their hands. They will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him. It is said, do not put the Lord your God to the test. When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time. Then Jesus filled with the power of the spirit returned to Galilee and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath Day as was his custom.:
Tim Schweikhard:
2:03
He stood up to read and the scroll of the Prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written. The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has appointed me, anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. I said is not Joseph's son. He said to them, doubtless you will quote to me this proverb Dr.:
Tim Schweikhard:
3:06
carrier yourself and you will say, do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did in Capernaum. And he said, truly, I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the Prophet's hometown, but the truth is there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah. When the heavens was shut up three years in six months and there was a severe famine all over the land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to widow at Sarah. Path inside and there were also many lepers in Israel and the time of the Prophet Elijah, and none of them was cleansed except naming the Syrian. When they heard this all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built so that they might hurl him off the cliff, but he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.:
Tim Schweikhard:
4:13
He went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee and was teaching them on the Sabbath. They were astounded at his teaching because he spoke with authority in the synagogue. There was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon and he cried out with a loud voice. Let us alone. We have what have you to do with us. Jesus of Nazareth have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the holy one of God, but Jesus rebuked him saying, be silent and come out of him. When the demon had thrown him down before them, he came out of him without having done him any harm. They were all amazed and kept saying to one another. What kind of utterance is this for? With authority and power, he commands the unclean spirits and now they come and to report about him, began to reach every place in the region.:
Tim Schweikhard:
5:13
After leaving the synagogue, he went to Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever and they asked him about her. Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever and it left her immediately. She got up and began to serve them as the sun was setting all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases, brought them to him and he laid his hands on each one and cured them. Demons also came out of many shouting, you are the son of God, but he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the messiah. At daybreak. He departed and went into a deserted place and the crowds were looking for him and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God to other cities. Also four, I was sent for this purpose. So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.:
Greg Taylor:
6:34
Thank you, Tim, for reading the word and may the Lord bless the reading of the word. Good morning, care for some good news from heaven. Today, today's title is and where we're in a series title called Luke Jesus, for everyone in today's sermon title is six clashes of Jesus with evil and we just read from Luke Four. That's where we'll be staying in this sermon today. Luke four is a hinge that's very important to understand. If we miss luke four, we're going to miss a lot of what we see in the stories of Jesus Healing and preaching and teaching and dying and raising from the dead and ascending to father. Again, we are going to misunderstand. So Luke four is very important for us to stay a moment and understand this hinge in this gospel story, how he Jesus comes as a king and now he enters into the synagogue as a profit and now this prophets reading from the Isaiah Scroll in, the spirit of Elijah and Elijah, Jesus now establishes what his mission is about and he's going to go about resolutely living out that mission of the gospel of God for everyone and we're going to see it over and over in luke four, 18 and in verse 43 and then also in luke nine too.:
Greg Taylor:
7:55
They all confirm that Jesus came to preach and to heal. He came to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. I love the, the, the slogan of [inaudible] that works in a medical mission in Honduras, and we're very connected with them and the partnership. They take their whole mission out of Luke, Luke nine, to to preach and to heal. In fact, they even made up a Spanish word is, is a made up Spanish word that is preached and heal. And so they believed this message so powerfully that they would call a whole ministry in Honduras, prednisone to preach and to heal. Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for prednisone and we just lift them up as we've mentioned them today and we lift up all of our missionaries around the world who are proclaiming and teaching the word of God. Thank you that people all over the world are taking bread and drinking the Cup and worshiping and singing this we just did and praying and lifting up their problems as we've just sung that we have a friend in you and what a friend we have so much so that we can bring our problems to you.:
Greg Taylor:
9:08
And I pray for those who are weak in heavy laden this morning. Those who have come through the end of a year and they're at the beginning of the year and they're not sure how they're going to this year. They're not sure how it's going to go. And I pray, Lord, for new strength for them not strengthened. Just some new resolutions are necessarily reading a great article in a magazine about how to live their 2019, put that they will find strength and the power of you and the Holy Spirit will inhabit their life and that we as a church will walk according to the spirit according to your word, and they will follow you. Jesus, with all of our hearts, soul, mind and strength. I pray, Lord, that you will pour through me today a gift of preaching. It's the only way I can be here and preaches through your power and your Holy Spirit.:
Greg Taylor:
9:53
In fact, it's the only way that any heart is going to be moved today, not by my words, but by your power and your spirit, and I pray that you'll move us. Give us good eyes and ears. Give us good hearts to hear, break open our hearts today so the Gospel can flow in and give us good lives to live it out. And I pray through Jesus name. Amen. Well, if you would like to follow along in the bulletin, there are six points that we're going to make six clashes of Jesus with evil. If you didn't get a bulletin and would like one, there's an insert there, raise your hand and one of the ushers can get to you and make sure that you have a bulletin, and as we come to each of the fill in the blanks, if you're that, there's one person that needs a bulletin here. If you're the kind of folk person that likes to fill in the blank, you'll see a red word here and you can fill in that blank on that. I won't necessarily mention that every time, but just watch for the red words.:
Greg Taylor:
10:46
Now as we've just read in Luke four, the first four verses, when Jesus says to the devil, man, cannot live by bread alone. Did you know that he was quoting scripture? Jesus was quoting scripture to the devil, and it should be a good lesson already for us, that when we want to resist evil, than we need to be coming from the power of the word of God. So Jesus says, man, cannot live by bread alone, but he's quoting something. Maybe in your Bible you have a reference, there's a great, some of your bibles, have a center reference. Those are great cross-references to use. Maybe your Bible says Deuteronomy Eight, verse three. That's what Jesus was quoting. Here's what the whole quote says and why is it important to look at that whole quote? Because in that Deuteronomy eight passage, God, through Moses was speaking to Israel about Manna and about why God gave the man and listen to why God gave them in the words of God to Israel from nine or for Deuteronomy eight, three, he humbled you, causing you to hunger and fed you with Manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known why?:
Greg Taylor:
12:05
To teach you that man does not live by bread alone, but by what? By every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord. Now people were that were reading luke early readers, and we should too should hear the rest of Jesus as a man doesn't live by bread alone, but by what? Jesus didn't say that part, but we need to hear the rest of it, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord Jesus was clashing with the devil, not just over bread, not over manner, but over whose word is authoritative? Now I want to ask you, in 2019, whose voice are you going to listen to? Whose voice is authoritative in your life? Because we know that all words are not true. Not everything that comes out of her own mouse are true. Do you weigh your words? We hope we hope we weigh our words.:
Greg Taylor:
13:00
Do you you expect other people to weigh their words? Do you listen for truth? Do you listen for what is authoritative? And so the question is, what are you going to? Are you going to listen to in 2019, that competing daily amusements that we all have from online sources, news, the maybe the voices in your head telling you that you're alone or telling you that you're not good enough? What voices are you going to listen to? Because that voice is the voice of the devil. That voice is not authoritative and so I want to ask you, what voice are you going to listen to in 2019? Is it going to be a voice of Truth and authoritative? The voice that comes from the mouth of God, listen to the voice of Jesus saying, what comes out of my mouth is your guidance. Well, the second class is in verse five through eight. Jesus allows the devil to show, and I say that carefully. Jesus allows the devil to show him all these things and they don't belong to Satan and Jesus allows this and he sees all these things in a moment and the devil claims that all these things could be yours if you would just bow down and worship me:
Greg Taylor:
14:14
and what does Jesus say again? Jesus is quoting scripture and says, it is written, worship the lord and what:
Greg Taylor:
14:25
and what? Look at diverse serve him only worship the lord and serve him. Only seen as trying to get Jesus to bow down to him and be confused about who really demands our worship, who really is deserving of our worship, but the only one who deserves our worship is God and Christ and the Holy Spirit, Jesus classes with the devil over who deserves worship. Now, what is the devil showing you and me as you begin this year? What is the devil showing you? If the devil was going to take you up and show you all the kingdoms of this world? Imagine for a moment what that would be. Maybe you're already now, but maybe you haven't considered it, but think about what would the devil be showing you that has distracted you in 2018, if it ever will? If the devil were to show you in an instant those things you selfishly want, those things you wish you could get by instant gratification like he's trying to get Jesus to, to just, I'll give you all this now. You don't have to go through all the suffering. Let's just do this now. Instant gratification. Some people want money for nothing without work, wouldn't you like money for nothing without work. It's. It's a. it's a common refrain. I hear people say, well, looking to win the lottery. Okay, we all want money for nothing that way.:
Greg Taylor:
16:02
Many of us, maybe we don't realize it, but so many times we're listening to our money. We're listening to our pocket book. We're listening to our wants and desires, and so when a challenge you in 2019 to pay attention to what we're listening to is, is the devil, the one that is showing us these things that we so cold need and maybe it's just we want. Well, my wife Jill and I learned that giving of our money to this church that we've been doing for 13, 14 years now that we've been this church. When we give back our time, when we give our first fruits of the support you give to us and, and, and the hard work that my wife does teaching school. When we give a first fruit of 10 percent, that's a biblical principle that says, we're giving of our first fruits because you are the one we worship, and did you know that you can give money as a way of confronting evil because the devil will make you believe that you own your money, but you don't.:
Greg Taylor:
17:10
We don't own our money. We don't own our lives. We don't own the very breath that we take at this moment. God gave it to us, and so when we give a 10th, when we give a first fruit, when we give a tithe back, we're confronting evil. We're confronting the powers of Satan that would say that that belongs to us. We're going to hold it tightly. It releases us. My wife and I and I and our family had been released from the power of money because we give the first fruits. We know who it belongs to, and it releases us. Thank God from the power of believing that that money, that thing that Satan will show us in constantly. We doesn't have to be ours. It's already got it.:
Greg Taylor:
17:55
Well, I want to challenge you. If that's something that you haven't done in 2018, maybe, maybe you haven't felt the power and the freedom of being released from money as a god, as something to worship that you will give, it's you will give because that's one of the ways that we confront evil as Jesus confronted evil. The Third Way that Jesus confronts the devil is he clashes over the assurance of God's deliverance. Jesus is assured by the devil of the Lord's care and concern. Jesus already had that assurance. The devil says, if you are the son of God, if if you are the son of God, then throw yourself down and by this time it took the devil two times. Listen to Jesus. Jesus quotes scripture. The third time the devil says, oh, I think I'll quote some scripture, and so Satan quotes from scripture and says, here's here's a scripture for he will command his angels concerning you to protect you and on their hands. They will bear you up so that you will not dash your foot against a stone, but Jesus answered him. It is also written. Don't put the Lord your God to the test, and what is Jesus saying there? I think if we put it in today's language, Jesus has turned to devil and saying miracles of God or not parlor tricks,:
Greg Taylor:
19:30
call upon the Lord just because of your whims or to show off, and what Jesus is going to do is he's going to go into the world and preach and he'll he's gonna. Use the miracles of God to show the compassion of God is gonna. Use the miracles of God to show the power of God. Miracles of Jesus were for the purpose of showing the power and compassion of God. Not Parlor tricks. Get Out. Devil you don't know what this is all about. Says don't put the Lord to the test.:
Greg Taylor:
20:07
Now, the fourth, the fourth one, the fourth clash of Jesus is with not with the devil, because at this time now the devil is left him and he begins his ministry and in that power of the Holy Spirit, he goes and he starts to preach and he'll and he goes into the synagogues and he finds favor there. Verse 14 and 15, he's filled with the spirit, returns to Galilee, a report about him spread throughout the region. He taught there and he was praised by everyone, and then he gets up at Nazarus and Nazareth in the synagogue and begins to read the scroll from Isaiah, and:
Greg Taylor:
20:48
in verse 18, the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of the site of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Jesus the king is now taking up the place of the Prophet, the Prophet Isaiah, the Prophet Elijah the Prophet Elijah. He's taking up that place and saying, this is going to be my mission to preach and to heal, and at this point it sounds really good. Sounds good to us too, right to heal the sick, the lame walk the blind. See, that's great. Who is going to argue with that? So why? When Tim read, why did you hear that? They took him to the brow of the hill that the city was built on and wanting to throw him off.:
Greg Taylor:
21:48
They had already said, this is Joseph's boy, hometown boy in his hometown. Why is it that they went from, oh, he's such a good reader. I love his voice to throw him off in just a few moments. Well, let's look at what Jesus said. Jesus didn't leave well enough alone. He could have just accepted the praise. He could have just accepted the flattery, but he doesn't. He Jabs at him and says, well, you're going to quote to me, Dr. carrier yourself, profit's not welcome in his own town. In fact, whenever it. Elijah was doing his work as a prophet, there were a lot of widows in Israel, but he didn't go to any of Israel at widows. He went to a window in Xero, Fath and luke makes a note just in case we miss it. That's enemy territory for the Israel and Oh, by the way, when Alicia was doing his prophetic work, there are a lot of generals and the Israelite army, but he didn't go to any.:
Greg Taylor:
22:54
He went to a guy named Naman, which by the way was one of our enemies. Generals do you begin to see why they flipped on him and took him to the brow of the hill. Jesus was teaching that the Gospel is ever. It was for everyone, so why does he class with this hometowns? Racism, because he needed to teach them that the gospel is for everyone and it always was and always will be, and they didn't always like this. Israel wasn't always down with that mission, but the Gospel is for everyone. The fifth class of Jesus is with unclean spirits over who has supreme power over people verses 31 through 39. Some people think it. Maybe you think that as you read Luke, who also wrote acts that the Holy Spirit doesn't really show up in the New Testament until the book of acts and some of us have been taught that the holy spirit comes and in acts two and comes upon the people.:
Greg Taylor:
23:59
Luke wants us to know that the Holy Spirit is alive and well as always been from the creation. From the beginning. God's spirit has been roaming the earth. God's spirit comes and goes as the spirit pleases and the spirit is with Jesus, and Luke says it over and over in the chapter, Luke chapter four, 19 times the words spirit, holy demon or devil appear. Do you think that luke wants us to see that there's a spiritual battle going on already and Luke chapter four, 19 times. There is a spiritual battle going on in Luke chapter four. Jesus comes not just to be Jesus, meek and mild. I've arrived and I'm just gonna give you all goodness, enlightened peace. Jesus comes clashing with evil and in a few moments we're going to talk about why that's so important for us today, but Jesus is clashing with unclean spirits over who really has power in the world and that's something we all need to know specifically those who are possessive and unclean spirit. They would love to know who really has the power. Now people wondered. They were amazed. We heard a couple of times in this reading how Jesus had authority over the demons. He hasn't even used hocus pocus. He doesn't use any magic words. There's no promotions, there's no stuff that he burns, there's no incantations. He just says, shut up and get out. That's how Jesus did exorcisms.:
Greg Taylor:
25:45
Shut up and get out. Now it reminds me that, and I've got to tell you a quick little story that reminds me of this woman who she. Her dishwasher broke and so she called the repairman to come and fix her dishwasher. Well, the only time he could come, she was at work. So she said, okay, let me just leave a note on the counter, describe the problem, and she did. She left the key under the mat. The repair man came and there was a note on the counter that basically said the ' broken in this way, and she said, now I have a rottweiler named brutus, and he's going to be on the kitchen floor, but don't worry about him, but under no circumstances are you to talk to my parents.:
Greg Taylor:
26:33
And so the repairman started his work. There's the parrot, there's brutus the rottweiler, and here's the dishwasher, and he's repairing. And the whole time the parent is making fun of the plumber for good reasons. You know, he's like this and the parents seeing everything that plumber show when they're doing their work, and so the whole time he's doing his work on the dishwasher, the parrot is named colleen and cusson and doing all kinds of stuff to the point where it's just driving the plumber crazy. Finally turns around and says, shut up. You stupid bird to which the parent says, get in Brutus. That one. That's one of my favorites. So the repair man learned the power structure of the home and so also in this world, that's what all these stories are trying to show. Lucas trying to show the power structure of this world and we need to be encouraged today.:
Greg Taylor:
27:28
The power structure of this world is that the devil is not in charge. As Cory said in his we saying, we belong to Jesus. Jesus is in charge. Jesus is the king. Jesus is the authoritative word. Jesus is the supreme power over people and over evil spirits. That's what these stories are showing us. So the sixth and last class of Jesus with evil in chapter four, verse 43, 44, Jesus seems completely unwilling to listen to the nonsense of evil spirits. They start spouting stuff like the parent and he's just says, shut up and get out, and the person that was possessed was not even harmed and it was in their right mind, and Jesus does this creative and healing work on behalf of that person who was possessed, but also seems really unwilling to listen to the nonsense of the evil spirits, which I think well we should consider today not to suffer fools and their nonsense gladly as well.:
Greg Taylor:
28:34
Whenever we hear it in this world, we need to go back to the first point. We need to listen for what is authoritative and true in this world and not spend our time on the nonsense of the world. Jesus clashes over whose voice is going to define his mission, and so we need to also clash with those that want to distract us from our mission. And the last few verses of the chapter, verse 43, there's some people that wanted to keep Jesus in that area and comparing them and they said, don't go, don't go. We want you to stay here. And Jesus said, now I've got to go to the other towns in Judea because that's why I was sent to preach the good news and to heal. That's why I was saying, and so Jesus goes and he stays resolute on his mission. Now, Jesus, as you can see in these six clashes, Jesus came on the offensive. He came to subdue evil, to destroy it, to defeat it. And so chapter four is the beginning of that work and we see Jesus doing that over and over until the cross and the resurrection and the ascension of Jesus and the reign of Jesus right now, Jesus was destroying the work of evil:
Greg Taylor:
29:46
that Jesus came to destroy. The work of evil came to preach and to heal, to show that he was destroying the work of the evil in the world. Let me give you this example about offense. What if you went and you were in high school and you went to the basketball coach and you said, I want to play basketball and I'm a pretty good shooter, but the coach said, well, we don't shoot. We only played defense. In fact, when we get the ball, we go down backwards and you say you don't shoot. Now we just try to defend the goal. Would you play or would you go to play a pickup game on the playground yourself where you can shoot? No, you wouldn't play, and likewise in our lives, in our church, in our families, we often just play defense. We just want to get by. We pray as parents, Lord, if you just get my kids through high school, if you just get them through without all the things that don't go through all the lists, but all the things that we don't want them to do, you're just playing defense. You're not even shooting the ball. We have to teach them how to serve. We have to teach our young people how to live the life of Christ. We have to play off once we've got to pray for them. We've got to show them how to serve and live this life and confront evil. When we see like Jesus did, Jesus didn't come just to play defense. He came to play offense. He came to offend the powers of evil in this world and he shows us right at the beginning of Luke for:
Greg Taylor:
31:27
that's why I look for so important. Now. Why is it so important for us today? Luke four and the work of Jesus is so important for us today is because we need to realize too that all these years down through the years to Jesus still reigns. Jesus still has victory over evil and we can have that victory as well. We didn't come to play defense. This church is not here to play defense. We came to play offense. We're gonna. Pray offense in fact, and so I thought today, why don't we pray? Offense I am saying are instead ofL , they're not playoff input. We're going to praise some offense today. I thought since this is the first Sunday of 2019, why don't we pray some offense? Why don't we pray some evil out of our lives today:
Greg Taylor:
32:16
who would like to have prayer for evil to be out of your life in 2019? Anybody want to do that? I do. Who would like to pray for their 2000, 19, that their relationships would be redeemed in ways you could never imagined, but you're troubled by in 2018. Anybody want to do that? Who would want to be prayed over that you would have a good work life? Anybody want a bad work life now when you love who would not want to be prayed over for that? And so I want to kind of switch it up today. We usually have a time of prayer after the sermon, but it's just for people who want to come and it's obviously for everybody every time, but often it's just a kind of routine. And I want to kind of flip the script today and we're not call every one of us to get prayed for today.:
Greg Taylor:
33:04
For Two thousand 19. For your family, for your work, for your marriage, maybe a new marriage may be a long standing marriage, maybe there's some stuff going on in your marriage or your family that you need. You don't have to come up and give details to anybody, but I wanted to just ask our shepherds to come up and for them to pray over me first, my wife Jill, I want to ask them to pray over for our staff over the worship team because we all need that authentic. We all need to be prayed over. We don't all need the power of Jesus for 2019. Would you like that? Would you like to just have an individual prayer by a shepherd today? I, I do. And I want that. And I'm going to be the first. Sorry I get to go first. Um, so just want to ask you, what'd you just stand with me?:
Greg Taylor:
33:57
Everyone of you to stand with me. I know some of you may be shy. You may not want to come, but this is for everybody. We're just want to line up and just get prayed over. They're going to be short prayers, but the shepherds come on up. We're just going to line up along the front from end to end to space yourself out. I'm going to come to one of your. Jill's going to come to one of you. After we get prayed over, we're going to join my corns. Beans are going to come and be one of the prayers and so these are shepherds mark and Pam, rushmore, Robert Garland. We also the Dickman's or out of town today and Karen is. She's working today so she's not able to be here, so Mike Hornsby is filling in. Is that one of our official shepherds, but he was an elder in some time, bat and continues to operate as a shepherd and Jill and I are going to be praying for you as well. So Jill and I are going to get some prayer worship team. Come on over and just line up with somebody. This one to one with one of the shepherds and y'all can start lining up to after the worship team gets some prayer, they're going to go up and lead us in a song and we'll just keep praying is come on down. Get that prayer that I explained that well enough. Okay. Yeah.:
